Hyderabad is the capital and the largest city in the state of Telangana. It is situated along the river Musi, which is located on the Deccan Plateau. The city has several artificial lakes such as Hussain Sagar Lake. With over 9.7 million population, the city makes up for the fourth most populated in the country.
Hyderabad city was established in 1591 by Muhamed Quli Qutb Shahin in order to extend his capital even beyond the Golconda Fort. However, in 1687 Mughals captured the city and the dynasty of Nizams was founded. Further, British residency and cantonment were housed in the city as it was the capital of the Princely state of Hyderabad. Post Independence, Hyderabad served as the capital of the United Andhra Pradesh but with the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the city became the capital of both Telangana and Andhra. This is the reason why the city resides in the winter office of the honorable President of India.
The Charminar serves as an important symbol of the Hyderabad city. The city serves as a combination of distinctive cultures due to the migration of numerous artists from all over the world.
