Hyderabad is the capital and the largest city in the state of Telangana. It is situated along the river Musi, which is located on the Deccan Plateau. Hyderabad city was established in 1591 by Muhamed Quli Qutb Shah to extend his capital even beyond the Golconda Fort. However, in 1687 Mughals captured the town, and the dynasty of Nizams was founded. Further, British residency and cantonment were housed in the city as it was the capital of the Princely state of Hyderabad. Post Independence, Hyderabad served as the capital of the United Andhra Pradesh, but with the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, the city became the capital of both Telangana and Andhra. This is the reason why the city is the winter office of the honourable President of India.
